About Ashton House Academy
An enrichment school in Richmond, British Columbia.
Who we are
Ashton House Academy is an enrichment school in Richmond, British Columbia. We teach competition math, creative writing, French, public speaking and debate, STEM and coding, and art.
Our classes suit two kinds of students: those who are already strong in a subject and want a real challenge, and those who are capable but need more confidence, whether that means speaking up in class or sticking with a hard problem.
For both, the approach is the same. Classes are small, the work is demanding, and teachers pay close attention to how each student is doing.

Our approach
Children tend to do their best work when they’re asked to go a little past what feels easy, with a teacher close by to help. That is the balance we aim for in every class.
We set work that is properly challenging, ask students to explain how they reached an answer, and give feedback they can act on.
Good marks matter. But the real goal is a student who can work through a problem they have never seen before.
What we teach
Our programs are grouped into four areas.

Future Leaders
Public speaking · Debate · Leadership
Public speaking and debate classes teach students to organize their ideas, speak clearly and listen properly to views they disagree with. Leadership work builds on the same skills: persuading people, and working well with them.

Future Scholars
Olympiad · AMC 8 & 10 · Waterloo CEMC · Math Kangaroo
Our math classes go well past the school curriculum. Students work on the kind of problems set in Olympiad contests, AMC 8 and AMC 10, the University of Waterloo’s CEMC contests and Math Kangaroo, and learn how to approach a question they have never seen before.

Future Communicators
Creative writing · French
In writing classes, students work on vocabulary, grammar and structure, and on finding a voice of their own. Petit Parleurs introduces children to French through conversation, listening and reading.

Future Innovators
STEM · Coding · AI · Art
Students build and test their own projects in STEM and coding, and get an age-appropriate introduction to artificial intelligence. Art classes cover both traditional and digital techniques.
How classes work
Small groups
Fewer students per class means more time with the teacher and more chances to take part.
Attentive teachers
Instructors who know their subject and follow each student’s progress closely.
Beyond the curriculum
Material that goes further than school and builds on what students already know.
Independence
Students learn to stay with a hard problem instead of waiting to be shown the answer.
Skills that carry over
Writing clearly and reasoning carefully help in every subject, not only ours.
Vision
A place in Richmond where hard work is expected and good work is noticed.
Mission
To teach small, demanding enrichment classes, and to help each student find the subjects they are strongest in.
