Olympiad & Competitive Mathematics

For students who are ready for harder problems than the ones they see at school.

All programs

Overview

School math mostly rewards getting the right answer quickly. Contest math asks for something else: patience with a problem you don’t know how to start, and the habit of checking why an answer works.

Students work through contest-style problems across the topics these competitions cover, and prepare for Olympiad contests, AMC 8 and AMC 10, the University of Waterloo’s CEMC contests (including Gauss) and Math Kangaroo.

What students learn

  • Strategies for problems they haven’t seen before
  • Written solutions that show the reasoning, not just the answer
  • Speed and accuracy under timed conditions
  • Familiarity with each contest’s format

How classes run

Classes are small, so students have time to try a problem on their own, compare approaches with each other and then talk the solution through with the teacher.

Typical class activities

  • Past contest problems, worked through together
  • Comparing different ways to solve the same problem
  • Timed practice before each contest
